# Ban a client from booking

> Stop a client from booking online, and confirm each booking your team makes for them.

A ban stops a client from booking with your salon online. Your team can still
book them, and Sable asks for a confirmation each time so nobody does it by
accident. A ban covers the whole salon.

## Who can ban a client

Owners and managers can ban and lift bans. A
[custom role](https://docs.sable.salon/guides/team/roles-and-permissions.md#custom-roles) can be given the
same permission.

## Ban a client

1. Open the client's profile.
2. Choose the **Client actions** button (**⋯**) next to the edit button.
3. Choose **Ban from booking**.
4. Add a reason if you like, then choose **Ban**.

The profile now shows **Banned from booking**. Owners and managers also see the
reason, who banned the client and when. Everyone else on the team sees only the
label. A client never sees the ban or the reason.

To change the reason, open **Client actions** and choose **Edit ban reason**.

## What a ban does

* **Online booking.** When the client tries to book or pay a deposit, the
booking page says online booking isn't available and asks them to contact
your salon. It never mentions a ban.
* **Booking invites.** You can't send a banned client a booking invite.
* **Bookings your team makes.** Sable asks whether to book the client anyway
before saving the appointment. Choose **Book anyway** to go ahead. Sable
records who confirmed. This also applies to a walk-in your team enters with
the banned client's name and phone number.
* **Payments.** If a client paid at the booking step and the booking was then
refused because of a ban, Sable refunds the payment in full, including any
  card fee.

## What a ban leaves alone

* Appointments already on the calendar stay exactly as they are. The client
can still view, confirm, reschedule, cancel and pay for them.
* Messages, reminders, receipts and text consent work as before.
* The client's history, notes and payments don't change.

## Who a ban covers

A ban follows the client's profile, even if you later change the name or phone
number on it. It also covers a second profile for the same person: the same
phone number and the same full name, even if that profile is archived or splits
the name differently (for example "Mary Ann" and "Lopez", or "Mary" and
"Ann Lopez").

A ban doesn't cover a separate profile Sable can't link to the banned client,
such as one with a different phone number or another person's name. A client
who books that way can get through, so keep an eye on new clients who look
familiar.

A family member who shares the banned client's number and doesn't have a
profile of their own can't book online with that number. Add them as a client
and they can book.

## Lift a ban

1. Open the client's profile.
2. Choose **Client actions**, then **Lift ban**.
3. Confirm with **Lift ban**.

The client can book online again straight away. Lifting a ban also lifts it
from any other profile for the same person.

## On iPhone and iPad

Open the client's profile and choose **⋯** at the top, next to the edit
button. The same **Ban from booking**, **Edit ban reason** and **Lift ban**
choices are there. The client list shows **Banned**, and the client picker in
a new booking and the appointment screen show **Banned from booking**.
