# Checkout, refunds, and receipts

> Ring up the visit with tips and retail, fix mistakes with clean refunds, and keep receipts flowing on their own.

Checkout is the thirty seconds where the whole visit turns into money.
Sable keeps it on the appointment, so the service, the retail, the tip, and
the payment all land on one ticket.

## Ring up an appointment

Open the appointment and start **Checkout**. The ticket starts with the
booked service, and you build from there:

* **Add-ons and extras.** Add another service, **pick from products** for
retail (a leave-in conditioner sold at the chair counts), or type a
custom charge for the one-off that fits nowhere else.
* **Discount.** Apply one when you mean to, with a value you choose, and
  remove it just as easily.
* **Tip.** Preset options plus a custom tip amount.
* **Payment.** **Card** or **Cash**. Card runs through your connected
payments; cash is recorded so your numbers stay true.

When it's paid, the appointment is marked completed and the transaction
shows up in **Payments & Banking** → **Transactions** with the full
breakdown: items, discount, processing fee, and what you netted.

## Receipts

Receipts send themselves after checkout; you'll see **Receipt sent** on the
transaction. Need it again? Open the transaction and resend it. No printer
tray, no "can you email me that?"

## Refunds

Mistakes happen: a duplicate charge, a no-show fee you've decided to waive,
a service that didn't land. Open the transaction and issue the refund from
there:

1. Set the **refund amount**: full or partial.
2. Pick the **reason**: client cancelled, no-show waived, duplicate, or
   other.
3. Add **refund notes** if your future self will want the context.

The refund is recorded against the original transaction, so the money story
stays in one place. Card refunds return to the client's card through your
payment account; the transaction shows **Refunded** when it's done.

<Note>
Refunds on invoices work the same way from the invoice itself. See
  [Create, send, and collect](/guides/invoices/create-send-and-collect).
</Note>

## Keep the drawer honest

* Record cash payments at checkout even though no card runs. Your reports
(and your taxes) are only as good as what you ring up.
* Use real refunds instead of quiet cash-backs. The paper trail protects
you if a client's bank ever asks questions.
